A very lovely and romantic Irish film. Ronan’s performance is fantastic (and Gleeson is enjoyable as always). I really appreciated how low-stakes the film was; it mostly avoided melodrama but still kept clear the importance of the events to Eilis. The third act was a tad contrived and could have been tidied up a tad, but the film is definitely an overall triumph. The period details are great (especially the costumes) and the overall restraint of the film is very refreshing. I really hope Ronan continues to do films like this rather than ones like “The Host”.
I give it three and a half boat trips, and a bookkeeping job.
