The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio) (1968)

From the setting (snowy Utah rather than the usual sunny western fare), to the characters (the non-invincible heroes, the negatively portrayed bounty hunters, the well-characterised and three-dimensional women), to the story itself (particularly the ending), the film is a deeply subversive western. The subversions aren’t gimmicks though; this is a well-told story that stands just as well alone on its own right. Possibly my favourite western.

I give it four and a half inches of snow, and a painfully unnecessary alternate ending.
