Burn After Reading (2008)

I’m always going to enjoy Clooney working under the Coens, and John Malvocich and Brad Pitt also deliver hilarious comic performances here.

Around halfway through, it becomes clear the film isn’t just aiming to be a comedy, and I think it does succeed at transcending the genre in making some broader points on the triviality of human life, on the nature of chaos and knowledge…there’s something of a nihilistic bent here, and I don’t think I’ve quite succeeded in decoding a greater meaning, but I feel like it’s there, lurking.

Even just as a comedy, the film is enjoyable, though a lesser fare than the Coens’ greats.

I give it three CDs, and a gym pass.
