A sleek, fun adventure focusing on several lesser-known comic villains teaming up (not of their own volition) to do the government’s dirty work. The plot and structure recall films like “The Dirty Dozen”. There’s a pretty good amount of chemistry between the characters, and a good amount of tension from the fact they can be terminated at any time.
The title is a bit of a misnomer, as Batman is hardly in the film, and it’s the characters in the “suicide squad” that are the real stars.
I found myself most fond of Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang. All of the characters were voice acted very well, but Harley, Batman, and the Joker were the clear highlights.
The animation is really good, and meshes well with the more adult tone the film is going for.
Honestly, my only real gripe is the story contorts into something completely different late in the third act. It was like the film I was watching for an hour and a half abruptly vanished, and was replaced with an entirely different Batman v Joker movie – not a bad one, just one very disconnected to what I’d been watching.
I give it three explosive collars, and a boomerang.
