X2: X-Men United (2003)

I’d heard this was meant to be one of the best superhero films ever, in the same class as The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2, so I was really disappointed when I found it very lacking. To me, it just felt like a repeat of the first film. Same essential conflict. Same thematic point. More characters, more action, more budget, but nothing that felt notably new to me.

It’s certainly not a bad film, and I am viewing this for the first time, not in its original context, but I remain really surprised this was received so much better than the first film. I’m struggling to pin down any notable differences. It feels like the same thing to me, but bigger. What point is this movie making that the first one didn’t? It just makes the same point louder and flashier, to my mind.

The cast remain the great highlight.

I give it two and a half jets, and a bizarre blue demon.
