Defending Elysium (2008) by Brandon Sanderson

A fairly well-told novellette, considering it was written before even Elantris, and thus very early on in Brandon’s career. Lot of concepts and worldbuilding at play here, with a fascinating and original ending (I’d expect nothing less from Brandon). I found the worldbuilding somewhat overwhelming and unnecessary for a story of the size, but a brisk pace was maintained anyway, so it was handled fairly well. Character work was underwhelming. Short enough, and conceptually interesting enough, to be worth one’s time…but personally, not really to my taste.

I give it two mindwaves, and an alien dissident.
