Deus Ex: Hard Line (2016) by James Swallow

A decent short story…nothing strikingly interesting here, but there’s nothing offensively bad about it. The character of Alex Vega is in an awkward position of never really having a strong enough introduction to justify her sudden primary role in the Deus Ex franchise – she’s popped up here and there, but never really had much justification for it. This story provides enough character background that that doesn’t really bother me anymore, but the character work could have been stronger (the Ivan character honestly felt more interesting and grounded to me).

The worldbuilding was quite good though. A natural progression from Human Revolution. The novella is short enough that fans of the franchise will probably find it worth reading, if for nothing else than the worldbuilding aspects.

I give it two inhibited augs, and a two-headed god.
