Moana (2016)

A solid, enjoyable Disney effort.

The setting is unique for Disney, and absolutely dazzlingly rendered visually, but the film loses a ton of steam after the first act. The music is enjoyable, the protagonist is strong (definitely a richer character than many other Disney princesses) and relatable, but the pacing and some of the comic elements fall flat.

The aesthetics are always strong though. The visuals, the music, the art direction, the animation, it’s all fantastic. The primary characters are good too, there just isn’t a particularly interesting film crafted around them. It was a lovely movie to watch, but I don’t think it will be sticking in my head long. I give it three chickens, and a Mad Max reference.
